The year 2019 of Säynätsalo Town Hall and Tavolo Bianco Ltd
Town Hall has gained its place among open and active Alvar Aalto sites. We had about 6500 visitors this year. Approximately 60% were Finnish visitors followed German (5,5%), Spanish (5%), Japanese (4,5%), French, American and Chinese (2-3%). We have had visitors from 53 different countries during the last two years.
Town Hall guestrooms and apartments were quite well booked during the season. Maybe more information is needed because some visitors were upset when they found that they could have stayed in the Town Hall instead of an already booked hotel room in Jyväskylä center.
Aalto Residency program hosted Japanese students and sabbatical architects during the year. Also, a group from the University of Tennesee spend four days in Säynätsalo in a workshop measuring Muuratsalo Experimental House and the Town Hall.
Aalto Experiences arranged a tour to Italy for 12 Aalto enthusiasts. There is an article with images on-line about the tour (in Finnish). In February 2020 Heli organizes another one-week tour to Italy with Luca Placci, a real Italian Aalto fan, and researcher.
Shorter tours to Seinäjoki, Kauttua, Villa Mairea, Paimio and even Artek Factory were arranged for residential visitors as well as for local people. Harri got a license to drive a taxi and our “Aalto Taxi Service – Human Scale Experiences and rides” was started. We have intentionally started slowly because of our limited recourses but an example of our tours can be found online.
Town Hall hosted the international Aino & Alvar Aalto Design Colloquium “Design & Peace” on 14-15th June 2019. Pearls of the colloquium are collected into a publication called Design & Peace. The online version of the publication is available for download here. A printed version is on sale in our Design Shop.
We are proud that Tavolo Bianco Ltd was nominated as the winner of “Kulttuuriympäristöpalkinto 2019” (Cultural Environment Award 2019). The arguments for the award: Tavolo Bianco Ltd receives the Cultural Environment Award for the brave and skillful revitalizing and branding of Säynätsalo Town Hall.
