Responsible for interior design are Australians interior designer Leigh Ellwood and architect Donald Holt. We are really flattered that Leigh and Donald are so engaged to help us. The interior will respect the spirit of the Town Hall and Aalto’s design.
This ambitious project won’t succeed without committed collaborators. We need your help in funding tables, chairs, stools and lamps. Major interior items listed are designed by Alvar Aalto.
A new company was founded in fall 2017 to help activate the different functions at the Town Hall.
The business idea for this company is to provide tourism, accommodation and event services as well as operate a residency program for architects, designers and visual artists in the Town Hall premises.
Harri Taskinen, entrepreneur, self-employed, multitalent in publishing, member of Alvar Aalto Society, CEO of the company.
Heli Leinonkoski, board member of the Alvar Aalto foundation and Alvar Aalto Society, chairwoman of the company’s Board of Directors.
Hannele Aapakari-Keinonen, baker and confectioner of the Café. She creates the mouth watering delicatesser, cakes and traditional Finnish sourdough breads and rolls for local people and visiting guests and turists.
A separate Advisory Board will be formed to support the company operations. Operations are done in co-operation with the Aalto Foundation.
Town Hall Café provides breakfast and lunch services as well as traditional café products for local residents, tourists and the residency occupants. The café includes a separate cabinet that can be used for example for workshops, pop-up stores, art exhibitions, meetings and small events. The café has potential to become a meeting place and a public “living room” for both the residency occupants and the local people.
What We Need & What You Get
Responsible for interior design are Australians interior designer Leigh Ellwood and architect Donald Holt. We are really flattered that Leigh and Donald are so engaged to help us. This ambitious project won’t succeed without committed collaborators. We need your help in funding tables, chairs, stools and lamps. Major interior items listed are designed by Alvar Aalto. According to designers plans we need to invest in Artek furniture about 30 000 euros in retail price.
We open a funding race for 15 000 euros.
An example of our purchases is chairs: 25 units of Aalto’s Chair 68 (legs, seat edge-band and backrest: birch, clear lacquer, seat: birch, clear lacquer) – retail price around 350 euros/unit.
Another inevitable purchase: tables – retail price total 13 000 euros… We put our own money and recourses to the project. We also try to engage companies to support us with this project.
We know that many Aalto enthusiast all over the world would be happy to help us also with this project.
If we don’t get all the asked 15 000 euros, we will shorten our shopping list or postpone some purchases – but we are going to open the café this summer!
We want to follow the interior plan made by our Australian Aalto enthusiasts, who also are a professional interior designer and an architect. This funding makes it easier for us not to take off important details of the design only because of the limited budget. We want to create an unique experience for all visitors and longer staying residency dwellers also with the café. Café will become the cherry on top of the great visit to the Säynätsalo Town Hall.
